Writer/Editor Earth Negotiations Bulletin
Pia M. Kohler is a Team Leader, Writer and Editor with the Earth Negotiations Bulletin. Holding Swiss, Canadian, and American nationalities, she is based in Massachusetts where she works as a freelance researcher and report writer. She is a Senior Research Fellow at UMass Boston's Center for Governance and Sustainability. Building upon experience gained in her prior academic appointments at Williams College and at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Pia also mentors other academics, offering varied editing and coaching services.
Pia's teaching and research have focused on the governance of chemicals and wastes (including developing one of the first interdisciplinary courses on plastic pollution), the design and operation of science-policy interfaces, and on global environmental politics more broadly. Her book, Science Advice and Global Environmental Governance (Anthem Press, 2020) combines these interests, showcasing case-studies of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
With ENB since 2002, she has contributed to coverage across many issue areas, notably for meetings of expert institutions. She has degrees in Geography and Environmental Science (McGill University, Montreal), Environmental Science (Yale School of the Environment, New Haven) and International Environmental Negotiations (MIT, Cambridge).
